This is the Bhavachakra — the Tibetan Buddhist Wheel of Life is one of the most visually complex and narratively rich paintings in the Himalayan sacred art tradition.

Hand-painted on cotton canvas in mineral pigments with 24K gold accents applied throughout by hand.

WHAT IS THE WHEEL OF LIFE?

The Bhavachakra — the Wheel of Life — is one of the most important sacred images in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, and one of the most recognizable works of Himalayan art in the world. According to tradition, it was created at the instruction of the Buddha himself as a visual summary of his entire teaching on the human condition.

The fierce figure holding the wheel is Yama, Lord of Death representing the inescapable fact of impermanence that runs through every life. At the center, three animals circle one another: a pig, a snake, and a bird, representing ignorance, hatred, and desire. The three states of mind that Buddhist teaching identifies as the root causes of suffering. The six sections depict six different realms of existence, each one visited by a compassionate golden figure offering the path toward freedom. The outer ring traces the chain of causes and conditions that keeps the whole wheel in motion.

You don't need to know any of this to appreciate the painting. But knowing it, the image becomes inexhaustible.
